FAQs

When does each ensemble rehearse?

For the most up to date information, contact the relevant director for each ensemble

SBSO: 5-7pm on Sundays upstairs in The Barn

SB Singers: 6:30-8pm on Mondays upstairs in The Barn

SB Big Band: 6-8pm on Thursdays in the Music Room

SB Folk: 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesdays in the Music Room

What does each ensemble do?

Feel free to check out our Ensembles Page for a run-down of the groups and what they do.

Alternatively, you can ask any of the Committee or Directors for more information, or just come along to a rehearsal!

Do I need to audition?

No, we welcome everyone who wants to join!

There may be opportunity to perform in a fifth, smaller ensemble: "SB Chamber Ensemble". Depending on your voice type/what instrument you play, you might be asked to perform a short audition piece. It's nothing to worry about, though!

How do I book and get to the Music Room?

You can book and access the music room 24 hours a day.

To use it, you must be a member of the society and have a student ID/any ID to hand in.

To book:

Go to the security desk, at the front of Main Building (click here for a site map; Main Building is 11). If you cannot access the desk or find any security staff, there is a telephone on the left of the double doors at the main entrance. Ring security, and someone will come to help you!

Ask to book out the music room and they will give you a diary to write your booking in.

To access:

Visit the security desk again. Ask for the keys to the music room, and mention you have a booking. They will ask for your student ID in return for the keys.

To find:

The video at the bottom of this page gives directions to the music room (if you are on desktop, it might be easier to watch the video via Facebook). On the site map, it is located in C4, to the north of the gym.

I want to perform as a solo or small group. Are there opportunities for this?

We'd love to hear our members perform! There are performance opportunities at Open Mic Nights, Battle of the Bands and other events throughout the calendar year, as well as main campus events like the Talent Show.

If you have any ideas or want to talk more about performing, please feel free to contact us or talk to any of the Committee.

I'm not a UoN student- can I still join the society and play in the ensembles?

Yes, we have plenty of members from Kegworth, Sutton Bonington and the surrounding villages who play in all of our ensembles!

If you have any other questions, please get in touch!
